News|Joy Division Documentary Tours International Film Festivals

New Order is, with out a doubt, one of the most influential groups to push Electronic Dance Music to it’s new level.

But before there was “Order”, there was “Division”. And before “Division” there was Warsaw.

In 1976, inspired by a Sex Pistols performance, Guitarist :Bernard Sumner, Vocalist:joy-division.jpg Ian Curtis, and Bassist: Peter Hook formed a little known band called , Warsaw, in Manchester, England.

Soon after, Drummer: Tony Tabac joins the group and Warsaw records for the 1st time

An Ideal For Living. It features four cuts: “Warsaw,” “No Love Lost,” “Leader Of Men,” and “Failure Of The Modern Man.”

The group changed their name to Joy Division in 1978 and finished up their debut LP, and with moderate success is opening for the Buzzcocks U.K tour by 1979.

With the singles, “She’s lost control“, “Transmission“, “Glass“, and “Digital” under their belt, they follow up later that year with “Love will tear us apart” (arguably one of their most recognized tracks around the world , to date), and “Twenty four hours“.

Joy Division tours Europe, playing Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Berlin and elsewhere, and began work on the next LP.

ian-curtis.jpgIn 1980, on the eve of their first tour of America, Ian Curtis committed suicide in his Manchester home.

Love Will Tear Us Apart,” released as a single, earns instant critical acclaim. It reaches the Top 20 on U.K. charts. Closer, the last Joy Division album is released.

The remaining 3 members emerged shortly after with a new keyboardist, and guitarist, Gillian Gilbert, and a new name New Order.

New Order became one of the most influential and celebrated bands of Electronic Dance Music. (Which it wasn’t called back then). The driving bass lines, commanding snares and vocals of Bernard Sumner shook up dance floors and turn tables all over the world,at a perfect 124 Beats Per Minute.:)

Their complete discography is so completely stunning that one of their most well known singles “Blue Monday”, has been remade, and re released continually up until today.

The Group is responsible for 10…yes TEN, top 10 U.K. albums between 1983 and 1995, and countless top ranked singles through out the world, and countless tribute albums, compilations with other artists, and sound tracks, including multiple tracks on the Platinum, “Pretty in Pink” soundtrack. (Which to me is still on of the best sound tracks of all time).

  1. I got to know Joy Division thru a documentary of sorts a couple of years back. I’ve loved them since. Thanks for the post! :)

  2. nice article, i’ve always listened to joy division/new order but never really researched their history. i first heard ‘Love will tear us apart’ when i picked up bass and got into music and it’s still a stand-out track even today.
